CKAN open data portal

A centralised open data portal publishing datasets, APIs and visualisations for citizens, researchers and businesses, with automated pipelines and compliance-ready metadata.

The challenge

Turning scattered public data into one trustworthy source

The organisation held valuable data across many departments and legacy systems, but there was no single place to find, understand or reuse it. Each team exported spreadsheets in different formats, with inconsistent descriptions and no clear ownership.

Citizens, journalists and researchers who needed the data had to email several departments and wait days for a reply. Compliance rules around metadata, licensing and update frequency were hard to enforce, which slowed down transparency initiatives.

  • Data silos made discovery slow and frustrating
  • No standard metadata or licensing information
  • Manual exports caused stale datasets and extra work
  • Limited API access blocked third-party innovation

Our process

A structured rollout from inventory to live portal

01

Discovery

We mapped every data source, owner and update rhythm, then agreed metadata standards and licensing rules with the legal and IT teams.

02

Architecture

We chose CKAN as the open-data engine and designed an ingestion pipeline that normalises formats, validates metadata and publishes APIs automatically.

03

Implementation

Custom CKAN extensions, a branded frontend, search, visualisations and harvesters from existing systems were built in short, reviewable sprints.

04

Go-live

We trained content owners, documented the publishing workflow and handed over monitoring so the portal keeps growing without us.

"What impressed us most was the clarity of communication. Every meeting ended with well-defined action items, so nothing was missed or misinterpreted. The portal went live exactly as promised."
